Papertrey Ink April Blog Hop

***this is my second post for the day, if you're looking for the Stampin' Sisters in Christ post, see just below, P.S. it also happens to use PTI products this week***

When I heard the challenge for this PTI blog hop included tissue, I struggled for a bit trying to imagine how to incorporate it into my card. I know a lot of folks are probably going to create stunning tissue flowers, but I don't own the right dies.

Then when I read that you could stamp then crumple the tissue it all became clear to me and I immediately reached for the set "Enjoy the Ride." I love my children, I really do. But having led three of them through driver's ed training, I might rename the set, or at least name this card, "Survived the Ride . . . so Far."

Each one of them has left a distinctive individual 'mark' on our family vehicles. There was the famous 'right turn on red Mom!!!' incident when my daughter swerved, without a pause, at a t-intersection, into heavy traffic on a road with a 50 mph speed limit. This was followed up by a left turn on red incident at that same intersection just a few weeks later because 'you make me so nervous Mom!!!" Ah yes, even though I was the passenger and not the driver, somehow it became my fault.

Backing out of the driveway is always an interesting learning experience for young drivers. . . I think we've lost no less than three side mirrors that way.

Food, too, can cause its own unique set of complications. . . we learned that diving for a poptart that falls to the passenger side floor while driving a vehicle can cause an unexpected and sudden intimate meeting with a street sign. Score: Street sign -- 1; car -- 0. At least I wasn't in the car for that one.

If you couldn't already tell, I used the tissue paper on the car. It crumples nicely, similar to a car's front panel that meets a post in the library parking lot (don't ask me how I know that one . . . ask child number two). After crumpling, I glued it to a cardstock cut-out of the car, tore and reglued the side mirror and played around with a brad to recreate a headlamp hanging down in a rather forlorn manner.

But, if you're familiar with that age, you know that life returns to sunny pretty quickly in the teenage driving world and my kids are more valuable and important to me than a piece of metal. No one was hurt in any of these incidents, they were just expensive driving lessons. So the rest of the card is bright and cheerful because we can smile over these times already and hopefully, it made my kids better drivers in the long run. :)

I found the sketch on a web site called the Shabby Tea Room. My stamping techniques on this card might not fit the 'shabby' style, but I can assure you our family vehicles most certainly do.

Thanks for looking.

Stamps: Papertrey Ink Enjoy the Ride, Through the Trees, Verve (sun)
Ink: orange, black stazon, smoky shadow
Cardstock: smoky shadow, Hawaiian shores, white, DP from Hobby Lobby
Other: copic markers, brads (SU), prima flowers, rhinestones, cuttlebug edge embossing folder

Excellent card! Love the 'dent' on the side of the car. Your kids and mine must have met at one time. Because I swear they had the same 'mishaps' while learning to drive! Drove me crazy! I do not envy any parent that starts this 'new adventure' with their kids. So glad it is behind me.

Great card, PeggySue! I love your story and creativity. Been there and been through that. I wonder how I could recreate the sheet metal DH used to close up the gaping hole after son #1 ran into a school bus? Wouldn't be anywhere near as cute as yours!!

PeggySue, As a mom who is going through the driving experience right down I can especially relate to backing up!! Love the card. I think I need to make this for my son.

What a fantastic card and post! When I had my students write personal narratives about lessons they had learned, I read many stories about their driving mishaps. I used to kid them about waiting to leave to school in the afternoons after they were off the roads--like they are ever off the roads.

HeHeHe...boy can I relate to these stories, I think if it weren't for guardian angels my kids would not have made it through those years. And we are minus one car...and the other still has a crumpled injury that was not repaired. And the garage is missing part of it's siding...but other than that I suppose we should count ourselves so blessed!
Love your story, your creative crumpling, and cute scene, PS!!

Oh Peggy Sue reading your post made me laugh out loud. Im glad to hear that everyone is ok except for the poor cars. The way you made the car with the crumpled side is just so clever, I made sure to enlarge the image so I could get a better look. I just love that you made this a bright, cheery card!! Thank you for giving me something to look forward to in another five years with my son. Hopefully I'll be able to have just as sunny an outlook as you do!

Great card! Story is very funny too. I have not approached the driving age yet, but I am sure it must be quite and adventure.

Lisa Hjulberg said...

Totally awesome, groovy card Ps!!! I LOVE what you wrote about the joys of teenage driving. I keep telling myself that I eventually became a good driver, so I need to trust that my boys will, too... except back in the 70's, there weren't so many HAZARDS and DISTRACTIONS and CRAZY DRIVERS... or cell phones. Yikes! I have to admit, though, I still can hardly bear to drive my father anywhere, even though I'm now 50 and he's 81. He definitely makes me nervous. Some things never change!

Speaking of backing out... my dad once asked me if when pulling in I was turning the steering wheel back and forth. No? Then why are you doing it pulling out? Good question! And one I've never forgotten, except I'm still not good at backing up.

Hugs!
Lisa
